Many villages in Melghat in Amravati district still have no all-weather road, and the tribal residents living there face serious hardship as a result. To draw the administration's attention to the problem, they took out a march in Amravati and voiced their anger.
The march began at Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar Chowk and reached the Collector's office. The protesters' main demand is that good-quality cement-concrete roads be built in every village of Melghat.
The problem of roads is plainly visible in several villages, including Domi, Bhutrum, Kuhi, Ruipathar and Chilati. Poor roads persist in many Melghat villages, and people are troubled by it.
The protesters said that the lack of roads in rural areas makes travel difficult and also hampers everyday work. The protesters and villagers are demanding that the administration pay immediate attention to these demands and take concrete steps on the road issue.
The march was led by Bhaiyalal Maskar. He and the citizens of Melghat warned the administration that if these problems were ignored, a sharper agitation would be launched in the coming days. Maskar said clearly that if the road problem was not resolved soon, an agitation would be started.
Meanwhile, villagers from Melghat also held a sit-in outside the Amravati Zilla Parishad on another demand. They wanted health and administrative staff who know the local Korku language to be appointed. CEO Satyam Gandhi assured them of action.
The people of Melghat are now watching how seriously the administration treats these demands and what steps it takes on the road issue.
