Maruti Suzuki began exporting electric vehicles in August 2025, with the e Vitara, built at its Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, leading the programme.
Demand for India-made electric cars is rising abroad. Maruti Suzuki has crossed the 50,000-unit mark in exports of its electric vehicles. The company began shipping electric cars overseas in August 2025.
The Maruti Suzuki e Vitara plays the most important role in this export programme. The electric SUV is Suzuki's first global battery electric car, and it is being supplied from India to several countries.
The e Vitara is produced at the Hansalpur plant in Gujarat, which is the only manufacturing plant for this global electric car from Suzuki. Exports began soon after production started.
The plant's annual production capacity has now reached 1 million vehicles. It is Suzuki's first plant anywhere in the world to reach such annual capacity at a single location. It makes vehicles for the domestic market as well as for customers abroad.
According to the company, Maruti Suzuki accounted for about 93% of the electric passenger vehicles exported from India between April and September 2026. It was also India's largest exporter of electric passenger vehicles in 2025-26.
The first export units of the e Vitara were sent to Europe, which remains one of the electric SUV's largest overseas markets. The car is now shipped to about 50 countries, including the United Kingdom, Norway, Germany, Japan and Switzerland. The India-made electric SUV is thus finding a place in international markets.
The company's share in overall exports is also large. In the first half of 2026-27, Maruti Suzuki accounted for more than 50% of India's total passenger vehicle exports. It has been the country's leading passenger vehicle exporter for five years in a row, and currently ships 16 models to about 120 countries.
A total of Rs 25,288.7 crore has been invested in the Hansalpur plant. About half of the company's total overseas vehicle shipments in 2025-26 came from this plant. The rise in e Vitara exports is therefore not just the progress of one electric car, but also a significant development for India's automobile manufacturing industry and its global export business.
