JVPD flyover in Mumbai's western suburbs targeted to open by December 31, 2027

The BMC says the 1.75-km flyover will cut a peak-hour trip of about 45 minutes to 20 minutes, ahead of the project's original March 2028 deadline.

To ease heavy traffic jams for motorists in Mumbai's western suburbs, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation is building the JVPD (Juhu-Vile Parle Development Scheme) flyover. The civic body has set a target of opening it to traffic by December 31, 2027, ahead of the scheduled deadline.

It is expected that once the bridge is ready, a journey that takes about 45 minutes during peak hours will be completed in just 20 minutes. Additional Municipal Commissioner (Projects) Abhijit Bangar recently visited the site to inspect the project and reviewed the works closely.

The flyover is being built in Andheri West, from the end of the C.D. Barfiwala flyover to the Juhu-Versova Link Road. It is 1,750 metres, or 1.75 km, long and 15.10 metres wide. The original final deadline for the project is March 31, 2028, but so that people get relief early, Bangar has directed that the works be completed at a faster pace.

The project faces several engineering challenges. Shifting important underground utilities and coordinating with the works of Metro Line 2B are the major ones. These include shifting water pipelines of 600 mm and 900 mm diameter over 400 metres. A sewer line of 1,200 mm diameter will be shifted using the microtunnelling technique. A complex task of sliding a girder sideways beneath a metro station also has to be carried out.

In addition, a 7-metre-long arch bridge will be built at the 90 Feet junction, and large spans on fewer pillars at Juhu Circle. To ensure these works are completed in time, orders have been issued to divide the whole project into three phases and have separate teams work simultaneously.

Once the flyover is built, the pressure on five major traffic junctions in the area, including Juhu Circle, will be eased completely. Vehicles heading towards the proposed Versova-Bandra Sea Link and the Mumbai Coastal Road (North) will benefit greatly. According to the civic body, traffic on the internal roads of Juhu, Vile Parle West, Andheri West and Versova will also move faster.
