Hyundai's sub-compact electric vehicle for India, referred to as Ioniq P in a global earnings discussion, is expected in the fourth quarter of FY2027, though price and launch date are unconfirmed.

Hyundai is preparing to launch a new small electric car in India's electric car market. Earlier this month, the company announced it would launch a sub-compact electric vehicle for India. During a discussion on the company's global quarterly earnings, the upcoming car has now been mentioned by the name Ioniq P, raising public interest in the name and features of Hyundai's next electric car.

The car is expected to arrive in India in the fourth quarter of financial year 2027, that is, between January and March 2027. Hyundai is reported to have fixed this timeline for the sub-compact electric car. However, the exact launch date, price, variants and official bookings have not yet been made clear.

Ioniq is Hyundai's flagship series, known worldwide for electric vehicles. In India, the company's Ioniq 5 electric car has been on sale since 2023. The company has also already brought the Creta Electric to the market. Ioniq P could thus become Hyundai's third electric car in India.

Entering the sub-compact SUV segment could give the company a chance to reach more customers. The model could be especially significant for buyers who want an electric car and prefer a relatively compact SUV.

On the technical side, the Ioniq P is likely to share considerable technology with the Kia Syros EV. It could be offered with battery packs of 42kWh or 51.4kWh. Hyundai has not yet released any official information on its battery or motor.

The possible specifications are as follows. Battery options could be 42kWh and 51.4kWh. The motor's likely output is put at 133bhp and torque at 255Nm. The likely range is 443km and 526km. These figures are based on the expected technical details of the Kia Syros EV. It has not been officially confirmed that the Ioniq P will get the same battery packs, motor and range. The actual range will depend on the battery, driving style, road conditions and the car's final technical design.

Several companies are currently competing for customers in India's electric SUV segment. After its arrival, the Ioniq P may have to take on models such as the Tata Nexon EV, Mahindra XUV 3XO EV and Kia Syros EV. Competition in the segment could intensify further with the Renault Bridger EV, Nissan's possible related electric SUV, and upcoming electric vehicles from VinFast, Maruti Suzuki and Honda.

For customers, battery capacity, real-world driving range, charging time, price and features will be key factors in the choice. On the whole, the Ioniq P could be an important addition for the company in India's electric car market. Its possible 526km range and compact SUV form are expected to keep buyers' attention on the car. How effective it proves against rivals will become clear only once the final price and official specifications are known.
