The D.B. squad of Gadchandur police station has taken action in a cattle smuggling case, chasing a truck headed towards Telangana and rescuing the 37 cattle packed inside it. The action took place on October 12.
Police seized goods worth a total of Rs 22.41 lakh, including the truck and the animals. Three accused have been booked and one has been arrested. Further investigation is under way.
According to the information available, on October 12, 2026, the D.B. squad of Gadchandur police received a reliable tip-off from a secret informant. It said cattle were being transported to Telangana for slaughter, crammed in with great cruelty, in a brown 14-wheeler Ashok Leyland truck (number MH 34 AV 2312) coming by the Bhoyegaon road.
Police immediately set up a blockade at Bhoyegaon. During the blockade, the suspect brown truck was seen coming from the Chandrapur side by way of Bhoyegaon. Police signalled the driver to stop, but he ignored the signal and sped away.
Considering the seriousness of the matter, police informed senior officers at once and began chasing the truck in filmi style. Seeing the police behind them, the accused tried to take the truck towards Telangana by the Gadchandur-Korpana road. Meanwhile, on seeing police again at a blockade in Pardi, the driver, fearing arrest, abandoned the truck by the roadside and began to run. Alert police personnel gave chase and caught the driver on the spot.
Police then inspected the seized truck in the presence of panchas. They found a total of 37 bullocks and cows tied tightly against one another in an extremely inhumane manner. The seized animals are valued at about Rs 7.40 lakh. Also seized were the 14-wheeler Ashok Leyland truck used for the transport, valued at Rs 15 lakh, and a black HMD mobile phone worth Rs 1,000 from the accused. Together these make up goods worth Rs 22.41 lakh.
All 37 rescued cattle have been taken safely to the 'Gorakshan Yaar Foundation Padoli, Chandrapur' for care and upkeep.
Police have booked the accused under Section 11(1)(d),(e),(f),(h) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act, 1960, amended Sections 5(a), 5(b), 9 and 11 of the Maharashtra Animal Preservation Act, 1976, Sections 325, 289 and 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), and Section 184 of the Motor Vehicles Act. A total of three accused are booked and one has been arrested. Police are investigating the case further in depth.
The action was carried out under the guidance of Chandrapur Superintendent of Police Ayush Nopani, Additional Superintendent of Police Ishwar Katkade and Gadchandur Sub-Divisional Police Officer Ravindra Jadhav. It was executed by a team of Gadchandur police station's station house officer, Police Inspector Pramod Banbale, Sub-Inspector Pankaj Hekad, head constable Sheetal Borkar, naik Balwant Sharma, and police personnel Sainath Upre, Suraj Dhole, Prakash Bajgir, Manohar Jadhav and Shrinivas Sodnar.
