Hyundai Venue, Kia Sonet, Mahindra XUV 3XO, Tata Nexon and Maruti Fronx offer turbo petrol engines, with prices starting between Rs 7.52 lakh and Rs 9.99 lakh.

Buyers today increasingly want turbo petrol engines rather than plain petrol ones. A turbo engine is smaller, yet delivers strong power and lively pickup. Here are five turbo petrol compact SUVs available in India.

The Hyundai Venue sells well on its looks and its turbo engine. It has a 1.0-litre turbo petrol engine that produces 118 bhp of power and 172 Nm of torque. It comes with two gearbox options, a 6-speed iMT and a 7-speed DCT automatic. Prices start at Rs 9.99 lakh. Its strengths are a striking design, plenty of features and a powerful engine. On the downside, the price feels slightly high and rear-seat space is somewhat limited.

The Kia Sonet is second. It looks similar to the Venue but offers more features. It has the same 1.0-litre T-GDi turbo engine, with 118 bhp and 172 Nm, and the same iMT and DCT gearbox options. Prices start at Rs 9.19 lakh, slightly below the Venue. Features include a Bose music system and ventilated seats. On the downside, the rear seat is not as comfortable and the interior no longer feels fresh.

Third is the Mahindra XUV 3XO, described as the most powerful of the compact SUVs. It has a 1.2-litre T-GDi engine producing 128 bhp and 230 Nm. Driving it feels like driving a proper SUV. For now it comes with a 6-speed manual gearbox. Prices start at Rs 7.99 lakh, which is a very good deal for this much power. It has strong power, ample space and plenty of features. The rear styling could have been a little better.

Fourth is the Tata Nexon, known for safety and holder of a 5-star rating. It has a 1.2-litre turbo petrol engine producing 118 bhp and 170 Nm. The vehicle is sturdy and roomy. Prices start at Rs 8.99 lakh, and it suits families. Safety, space and power are its strengths, while the design now looks a little dated and the engine is somewhat noisy.

Fifth is the Maruti Fronx, meant for those on a tighter budget. It looks quite stylish. It has a 1.0-litre Boosterjet turbo engine producing 99 bhp and 148 Nm. Power is lower than the other four, but mileage is good. Prices start at just Rs 7.52 lakh, making it the cheapest turbo SUV on the list. The design is attractive, the features are good and the price is low, but the body feels slightly light.

The choice depends on need. For power, the XUV 3XO is the pick; for features, the Sonet or Venue; and for a lower budget, the Fronx is the best option.
