Shopkeepers and small traders have occupied both sides of Godhni Road in Nagpur district. The road is getting narrower, which is hitting traffic and troubling thousands of motorists every day.

The problem is growing from Faras Chowk in West Nagpur to Godhni, with encroachments visible on both sides of the road. On one side, shopkeepers have illegally taken over the footpath. On the other, motorists have turned the road itself into a parking lot. Both drivers and pedestrians face serious difficulty.

Vehicles ply on Godhni Road through the day, yet there is no regular action to clear the roadside encroachments. Local residents say the anti-encroachment squad acts only occasionally, and soon afterwards the situation returns to what it was.

A weekly market is held here every Thursday, and on that day the arrangements break down completely. In several stretches, shop goods spill onto the road. Fruit and vegetable sellers and other small traders have also taken up space along the roadside, reducing the width left for vehicles. Jams form during peak hours and motorists are stuck for long periods.

The lack of parking is also becoming a chronic problem for traffic on this road. There are many shops, hospitals, halls and other establishments here. With no parking space, visitors' vehicles are seen parked on the road. No-parking zones are also crowded with vehicles, narrowing the road further and leaving drivers without enough room to move. Traffic comes to a standstill.

Heavy vehicles are meant to use Koradi Road, but many truck drivers still use Godhni Road, leading to accidents and jams. Residents say minor and major accidents occur here frequently.

Jams are a major headache late in the evening and at night. Even so, the administration appears unable to take firm action. Residents demand that the administration pay immediate attention to the problem.
