Letters sent by post reportedly threaten to shoot the traders if they do not pay; police are registering a case and probing whether the gang has any role.

Eight bullion traders in Nagpur have reportedly received threatening letters sent in the name of the notorious gangster Lawrence Bishnoi. Each has been asked for Rs 10 lakh. The letters have caused concern among the city's jewellers. The report is dated November 1, 2026.

The letters are said to have been sent by post. They warn the traders of serious consequences. They reportedly say that those who do not pay will be shot or killed.

The deadline for payment is not the same for everyone. Some traders have been told to arrange the money within three days, while others have been given five days.

The senders have also reportedly threatened the jewellers with an attack like the recent shooting incident linked to Bollywood actor Tiger Shroff.

The letters also say that traders willing to pay should write "Jai Shri Ram" outside their shops. They will then be given further instructions about the payment.

The traders' worry is greater because the festival season is an important time for the gold and silver trade.

Rajesh Rokde, national president of the All India Gem and Jewellery Domestic Council (GJC), has reportedly brought the matter to the notice of Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis.

The association has also approached Nagpur Police Commissioner Vishwas Nangre Patil and demanded immediate security arrangements for jewellery traders.

Police have asked the traders not to panic but to stay alert. They have asked them to report any threatening letter, phone call or suspicious message to the police at once.

Police are in the process of registering a case. They are trying to identify the senders and are also examining whether the Lawrence Bishnoi gang actually has any role. The people behind the extortion attempt have not been traced so far.

The incident has raised fresh concern over the security of jewellery shops in Nagpur amid the festival-season crowds.
