A case of alleged illegal cannabis cultivation has come to light at Dahegaon, under the Kalmeshwar police station limits in Nagpur district. On Monday evening, the NDPS squad and Kalmeshwar police jointly acted on a farm and recovered nine cannabis plants from its bund. Babloo Sahu, a labourer who worked on the farm, has been detained. He is a resident of Valni.
According to police, the plants grown on the bund were more than five feet tall. Material used for consuming cannabis was also seized along with the plants.
The action began with information from neighbouring farmers, who had reported that cannabis plants were being grown in that field. On receiving the tip-off, a team of the NDPS squad and Kalmeshwar police reached the spot. During the inspection, nine cannabis plants were found on the bund of the field.
Preliminary investigation by police reportedly indicates that Sahu himself had planted them. The accused worked as a caretaker on the farm, and he was detained for this reason.
The farm is said to belong to the head of a college group. However, there is no official confirmation yet of what role the owner may have had, or whether the owner knew of the alleged illegal cultivation. Police are examining all aspects of the case.
The NDPS squad's personnel in the joint operation were API Mehkar, PSI Bhimte, Prakash Dhoke, Amol Nagre and Pravin Dehvare. From Kalmeshwar police, PSI Doifode, Pawan Gaikwad and Ankush Mule took part.
Police are continuing their investigation.
