Chinese carmaker BYD is bringing one new technology after another to the electric car market. At the 2026 Paris Motor Show, the company has now unveiled its flagship electric SUV, the BYD Atto 8. The seven-seater comes with a second-generation Blade battery and flash charging technology. Sales in Europe will begin in the first quarter of 2027.
The car's charging speed has drawn the most attention. According to the company's claim, the 115 kWh battery can be charged from 10% to 70% in just 5 minutes at a compatible flash charging station. Charging from 10% to 97% takes only 9 minutes. The company also claims that even at minus 30 degrees Celsius, charging from 20% to 97% takes 12 minutes. BYD also plans to set up 3,000 flash charging stations in Europe by the end of 2027.
The Atto 8 will come in two variants. The Design RWD has a single electric motor at the rear, which delivers 456 hp of power and 365 Nm of torque. This variant has a WLTP range of 652 km and takes about 8 seconds to go from 0 to 100 km/h.
The Excellence AWD gets two electric motors. It produces 764 hp of power and 775 Nm of torque and can reach 100 km/h in just 4.6 seconds. This variant has a range of 602 km.
The SUV is 5,040 mm long, 1,996 mm wide and 1,760 mm tall. The cabin has a 15.6-inch touchscreen, a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster and a 26-inch head-up display. Features such as Google Built-in, Google Assistant and wireless phone charging are also offered. A panoramic glass roof, 3-zone climate control and heating, ventilation and massage for the front seats are also provided.
With all seven seats in use, boot space is 270 litres. With the second and third rows folded, this rises to 1,960 litres. There is also an additional 136 litres of storage under the bonnet. For now, the SUV has been announced for Europe, and the company has given no information about a launch in India. Indian customers are therefore watching for when the car will be available to them.
