The Nagpur telecom circle of Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has appealed to all its landline and broadband customers to leave the old copper cable network and migrate at once to a high-speed optical fibre (FTTH) connection.
The company says it will become difficult to keep the old copper network running in the coming days. For this reason, it is being phased out completely, in stages.
The decision follows problems in the city. Underground copper cables are being stolen at various places. Infrastructure development work under way is also damaging the cables.
An underpass is being built near the Zero Mile metro station area. This work and other major development projects are repeatedly damaging the copper lines. Repairing the old copper network again and again has therefore become challenging and practically difficult.
BSNL has listed some benefits of moving to a fibre connection. First, customers can keep their existing landline number as it is, with no change.
Second, customers on a monthly plan of Rs 2,500 or more will get installation and a key modem free of charge. This is a special offer.
Third, fibre will offer better quality and high-speed, high bandwidth, faster internet speeds, a stable network and quicker resolution of complaints or faults. Fourth, the network is more secure, as optical fibre lines are far less likely to be cut or stolen than copper.
BSNL Nagpur has requested its customers to give their consent for migration to the fibre network within 15 days and to cooperate with the team. BSNL's field teams are in constant touch with customers to complete the migration with the least inconvenience.
