Stand-up comedy shows draw packed houses in Nagpur as new venues open
Weekend shows are selling out in the Orange City, with big names due this month and local comedians filling cafes, pubs and cultural centres.
Laughter is ringing out across the Orange City these days. Nagpur residents looking for relaxation and entertainment away from work stress are turning fast to live performances. Shows are selling out, new venues are opening and well-known performers have busy schedules, making the city's comedy scene lively.
Whether it is a weekend outing or an evening after a working week, stand-up comedy is becoming a stress buster for Nagpur's young people and families. Over the past few years, the art form has put down deep roots in the city.
It is no longer only the big names. Emerging stand-up comedians are also drawing large crowds at the city's cafes, pubs and cultural centres. The biggest reason for the popularity is its ease and its link with everyday life. Office anecdotes, household squabbles, social media habits and daily struggles all make audiences feel connected.
Content writer Aditi Hedau said, "I started watching stand-up comedy shows with friends last year, and now it has become our favourite weekend plan. There is a special freshness in laughing freely in a room full of strangers and staying away from work stress for a few hours."
Software professional Hadesh Parshivnikar has a similar experience. He said, "I used to think stand-up comedy was only good online, but being part of a show in person is a completely different experience. Live shows are highly interactive and memorable."
Several stand-up shows by well-known performers from across the country are due in the city this month, a treat for residents. On October 10, lyricist, writer and stand-up comedian Varun Grover will present dark humour, personal stories and witty takes on everyday worries as part of his new solo tour, "Love, Death and Ketchup".
On October 25, Sharon Verma of "India's Got Latent" fame will take the stage. She brings a solo stand-up act based on everyday experiences and the setting of Indian families.
Besides the big names, there is no shortage of stages in the city for local performers. The Comedy Remedy Club has become the main hub of the city's stand-up scene. "The Saturday Lineup" and a Fresh Humour Hour are held there regularly. Solo shows by performers such as Shubham Pujari are also staged there, such as "Rock Bottom" on October 9.
Cafes are not far behind. At popular cafes such as Ruh and Roast Coffee House and The Rise and Grind, special stand-up events such as "Parivaar Pe Vaar" have brightened the city's evenings.
