The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has begun trials to select Arunachal Pradesh's cricket teams. The trials cover senior teams as well as age-group teams for both men and women. The board's aim is to enable Arunachal Pradesh teams to take part in tournaments of the ongoing domestic cricket season.
BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia said on Tuesday that selection trials were under way in Arunachal Pradesh. According to him, M. Khairul Jamal Mazumdar, a member of the BCCI's Apex Council, has been made convener for the trials.
Saikia said the trials were being held with the help of some independent selectors from outside the state. The state cricket body is not part of the process. The BCCI is conducting the trials itself, and the effort is to field Arunachal Pradesh teams in the upcoming Ranji Trophy and other domestic tournaments.
So far, Arunachal Pradesh had not played its first Ranji Trophy match, against Nagaland in Ahmedabad. Earlier, the state team had also not taken part in the Vinoo Mankad Trophy and the Under-19 women's T20 Trophy. The impasse arose from a dispute between two factions of the Arunachal Cricket Association (ACA). The related legal case is being heard in the Itanagar bench of the Gauhati High Court.
The responsibility of selecting players has been given to a panel of independent selectors from Assam. The panel comprises former players Satya Gopal Chakraborty, Jayanta Chowdhury and Deep Bora. Chakraborty is the chairman of the panel.
The panel has also been tasked with making full preparations for Arunachal Pradesh teams to take part in the Ranji Trophy, the Col. C.K. Nayudu Trophy, the Senior Women's T20 Trophy and the Vijay Merchant Trophy.
A local source in Arunachal Pradesh also confirmed that trials were on in Itanagar. According to the source, trials for men and women players were held from 8 am on Tuesday at Delhi Public School in Itanagar. They are being held to pick the senior women's team, the men's Under-16 team, the Under-23 team and the senior men's team.
