Pandit Kalki Ram of Ayodhya describes a coconut ritual that devotees can perform before and on Diwali, along with other traditional practices, to seek Goddess Lakshmi's blessings.
In Sanatan Dharma, Diwali is regarded as a symbol of happiness, prosperity and wealth. On this day, Goddess Lakshmi and Lord Ganesha are worshipped with due rites. According to religious belief, performing certain special rites on Diwali night brings happiness, prosperity and well-being to the home. Those who want Goddess Lakshmi's blessings this Diwali can learn of some remedies suggested by astrologers.
Pandit Kalki Ram, an astrologer from Ayodhya, says the worship of Goddess Lakshmi on Diwali night carries special significance. According to religious belief, receiving Lakshmi's blessings on this day brings happiness, peace and prosperity. For this reason, devotees perform some traditional rites in addition to the formal worship.
According to Pandit Kalki Ram, a day before Diwali one should take a dried coconut with its husk and keep it in a clean and safe place. The coconut should then be placed in flowing water or a pond. It is said that while performing this rite, one should remember Goddess Lakshmi in the mind and resolve to go and bring the coconut back the next day in the evening. One is advised to stay silent during this time.
On the evening of Diwali, at sunset, one should go to the coconut with a new red cotton cloth. First, remembering Lord Ganesha, one should chant the mantra "Om Shri Ganeshaya Namah". Then, meditating on Goddess Lakshmi, one should wrap the coconut in the red cloth and bring it home.
On reaching home, one should light a lamp, place the coconut near the idols of Ganesha and Lakshmi, and perform panchopachar puja. Offering incense, lamps, flowers, perfume and naivedya, one should pray for happiness and prosperity. It is said that doing so brings the special blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
According to astrology, on Diwali it is considered auspicious to worship the safe, or the place where one keeps one's money. After the puja, there is a custom of placing the coconut at that same spot. It is believed that this brings prosperity to the home and the blessings of Goddess Lakshmi.
In addition, reciting the Gopal Sahasranama or the Santan Gopal Sahasranama 108 times on Diwali evening is also considered religiously significant. Devotees can perform these rites according to their faith and ability.
