The pacer's four wickets limited New Zealand to 185 in 40.2 overs at Auckland, and a celebration he dedicated to his girlfriend has gone viral.
India put in a good performance in the first ODI against New Zealand. Pacer Arshdeep Singh is the most talked-about player of the match. He took four wickets and then performed a special celebration on the field for his girlfriend, a video of which has gone viral.
The match was played at Eden Park in Auckland. India won the toss and chose to bowl first. New Zealand managed only 185 runs in 40.2 overs. Rain arrived midway and play was halted for a long time.
In reply, India scored 143 for 5 in 22.4 overs. India were then given a target of 143 runs in 32 overs under the Duckworth-Lewis-Stern (DLS) method.
Arshdeep took four wickets in his 10 overs. He dismissed Will Young early on, then took the wicket of Henry Nicholls. Glenn Phillips, who has been in form, also fell to him. Kyle Jamieson was the fourth wicket. New Zealand did not even reach 200 as a result. Gurnoor Brar and Anshul Kamboj also backed Arshdeep well, so the New Zealand batters never got a chance to come back. Arshdeep led the Indian bowling.
Speaking about his performance in a mid-match interview, Arshdeep said, "The weather is good here and bowling feels easy. Coming from the subcontinent, it is always fun to bowl here when you get good bounce off the wicket. The wind is helping too. In the end, I would say we got a bit too greedy and were just looking for wickets. We should have kept doing what we were doing through the innings, and we would have got the wickets. But at the end we got a bit too greedy. I felt there was something special in the pitch, so we were trying to hit the seam and bowl hard."
Asked about his favourite wicket, Arshdeep said, "My favourite wicket would have been the fifth, which I did not get. I am still looking for it. This celebration is for my girlfriend. When we are out, we do these dance steps. Whenever either of us is in a bad mood, we cheer each other up with this celebration, so this was for her. I think it is a good score. We just have to bat according to the pitch and we will get the job done."
