Amul has raised the prices of its ghee and butter, with the 1 kg ghee carton going up by Rs 50 to Rs 680, just as the festive season nears.
With the festive season near, dairy major Amul has raised the prices of its ghee and butter. The increase applies to some of the company's popular products, notably ghee and butter. Household and food budgets already swell in the festive season, and the hike will be felt clearly by ordinary customers.
Amul's 1 kg ghee carton, earlier priced at Rs 630, will now cost Rs 680, an increase of Rs 50. The 500 gm pouch of pure ghee, earlier Rs 325, has been raised to Rs 345.
Butter has also become costlier. A 100 gm butter pack now costs Rs 66 instead of Rs 63, while the 500 gm butter pack has gone up from Rs 310 to Rs 325.
On Amul's online platform, cow ghee is currently available at Rs 740 per litre. Sagar ghee is priced at Rs 710, pure ghee at Rs 700 and buffalo ghee at Rs 723 per litre.
Demand for branded ghee and milk products has risen suddenly in several markets, including Gujarat and Rajasthan. The main reason cited is a strict drive by the administration in these states against fake and adulterated milk products. About 2 lakh kg of suspected fake ghee has been seized in the past six months. Following the crackdown, customers have shifted towards branded products. A gap is said to have opened between demand and supply, forcing the company to raise prices.
The increase is being seen as the first major one since the GST cut. In September 2025, the government reduced GST on several dairy products from 12 per cent to 5 per cent. Amul then cut prices of more than 700 of its products, giving customers major relief. The hike, coming just ahead of the festivals, has now wiped out some of that relief.
