Amul has raised prices of ghee and butter just before Diwali, with a 1 kg ghee carton going from Rs 630 to Rs 680 amid reported shortages in some cities.

Inflation has returned in the festival season. Prices of several essentials have already gone up, and Amul has now raised the prices of ghee and butter, which will hit household budgets. The increase comes just before Diwali, raising fears that Diwali snacks will also become costlier.

Under the new rates, a 1 kg carton of ghee will cost Rs 680, up from Rs 630, meaning customers pay Rs 50 more per pack. A 500 g pouch of pure ghee, earlier priced at Rs 325, has been raised to Rs 345.

Butter prices have also gone up. A 100 g pack, earlier Rs 63, will now cost Rs 66. A 500 g pack of butter will cost Rs 325 instead of Rs 310. Those buying ghee and butter before the festival will face a higher expense.

The increase comes at a time when demand for Amul's cow ghee is high in many markets and a shortage is also being felt. It has been reported that the availability of Amul ghee, especially cow ghee, has dropped in some cities. Customers may therefore have to contend with supply problems as well as higher prices before Diwali. The situation is expected to affect the market.

Action was taken against adulterated products in Gujarat and neighbouring Rajasthan, and demand for branded ghee has risen since. The price rise has largely reduced the benefit customers got when GST was cut in September 2025. Tax on dairy products was then reduced from 12 per cent to 5 per cent.

Prices of different varieties of ghee have also been listed on Amul's online platform. Cow ghee is listed at Rs 740 per litre, sea ghee at Rs 710, pure ghee at Rs 700 and buffalo ghee at Rs 720 per litre.

Online buyers may also face difficulty. Varieties such as pure ghee, buffalo ghee and some combo packs were showing "out of stock" on the platform. The pressure on supply from higher festival demand is evident.
