Bank branches in Gujarat are shut on Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel's birth anniversary, while those in other states are expected to work as usual.

Customers planning to visit a bank on October 31, 2026, to complete an important transaction should first check the holiday position. Banks in Gujarat are closed today on account of the birth anniversary of Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel. Banks in the rest of the country will remain open, so customers should check their state's holiday schedule before going to a branch.

According to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) holiday schedule, banks in Gujarat are closed on October 31 for Patel's birth anniversary. Branches of both public and private sector banks will be affected. Routine work will not take place today at branches of banks such as State Bank of India (SBI), Punjab National Bank (PNB), Bank of Baroda, Canara Bank, Axis Bank, HDFC Bank and ICICI Bank in Gujarat.

Banks will be open today in all states other than Gujarat. Regular banking is expected to continue in states such as Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan, Punjab, Haryana, Karnataka, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Odisha, Tamil Nadu, West Bengal and Arunachal Pradesh. Customers in Maharashtra can likewise visit their branches today to get their work done. Timings may change locally or according to a bank's own notice.

The holiday does not apply to the whole country. Bank holidays vary from state to state and according to festivals or special days. Customers are therefore advised to confirm from the RBI's official list of holidays.

Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel was born on October 31, 1875, in Nadiad, Gujarat. He played a major role in the freedom struggle. As independent India's first Deputy Prime Minister and first Home Minister, he made a major contribution to unifying the country. He had a key hand in merging more than 562 princely states into the Indian Union after Independence, which is why he is called the "Iron Man". On his birth anniversary, October 31 has also been observed as National Unity Day since 2014.

Even when branches are shut, many digital banking services will keep working. Money can be sent through internet banking, mobile banking and UPI. Cash can also still be withdrawn from ATMs.

However, tasks that require a visit to the branch, some cheque-related processes and other paperwork may be held up because of the holiday. Customers will find it easier to confirm the holiday before going to a bank and, where possible, to complete their work through digital banking.
