Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar suspended Senior Inspector Vishwajeet Jagtap for dereliction of duty after a departmental inquiry into the handling of the case.

Market Yard, October 31, 2026: A senior police inspector of the Pune city police has been suspended on the allegation that a Rs 30 lakh robbery was recorded as a bag theft instead of a robbery. Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar took the action after a departmental inquiry into the handling of the case.

The suspended officer is Senior Inspector Vishwajeet Jagtap. Commissioner Kumar acted against him on the ground of dereliction of duty.

The incident took place on October 7. However, the FIR at Market Yard police station was registered only on October 28.

According to the FIR, Shravan Devasi (22) and Ganpat Devasi (18) are employees of an angadia (cash courier) firm in Market Yard. On October 7 they were travelling on a scooter with Rs 30 lakh in a bag. It is alleged that around 1.15 pm, five men on two motorcycles stopped them on Shivneri Road near Market Yard.

The accused allegedly sprayed some substance on the faces of the two employees, snatched the bag containing Rs 30 lakh and fled.

The employees then informed their employer, Rakesh Parihariya, about the incident. Parihariya contacted the police. Market Yard police began an inquiry but, it is alleged, did not register a case of robbery. Instead, the matter was recorded as a bag theft on October 9.

Meanwhile, Swargate police were investigating a separate case of a trader being robbed in the Salisbury Park area. In that investigation they arrested two suspects. During questioning, the two reportedly confessed to robbing Shravan Devasi and Ganpat Devasi of Rs 30 lakh on October 7.

This alleged confession brought to light the discrepancy in the registration of the case at Market Yard. A departmental inquiry followed, and on its basis Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar suspended Senior Inspector Vishwajeet Jagtap for dereliction of duty.

In brief, the sequence of events is as follows: the bag containing Rs 30 lakh was snatched on October 7, Market Yard police recorded it as a bag theft on October 9, and an FIR was registered at Market Yard police station on October 28. The discrepancy in the record came to light after the alleged confession of the two suspects arrested by Swargate police.
