Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar transferred the Market Yard station's senior inspector after an alleged Rs 35 lakh robbery was recorded as lost property.
Pune, October 29, 2026: An alleged robbery of Rs 35 lakh at Market Yard police station was not registered as a robbery. It is alleged that the incident was instead reported as a case of lost property. Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar then transferred the station's senior inspector on the alleged charge of "suppressing a crime".
The robbery is said to have taken place on October 9. The matter came to light when Swargate police arrested two men in connection with a separate attempted robbery. The two allegedly confessed during questioning that they had targeted an angadia carrying Rs 35 lakh in the Market Yard area.
After this confession, the investigating officers traced the businessman's earlier complaint. According to Commissioner Kumar, police have recovered Rs 25 lakh from the suspects.
It is said that the businessman went to Market Yard police station several times and told officials that the man carrying the cash had been robbed. Despite this, the station staff recorded it as lost property instead of registering a robbery case.
The chain of events is linked to an attempted robbery on September 23. That day, a Market Yard shopkeeper was going home with Rs 4 lakh. It is alleged that the two suspects tried to rob him, but their attempt failed when a young woman intervened. Police found the two suspects while investigating this case.
After questioning them, police reached the October 9 robbery, and the cash was then recovered.
Questions are now being raised over how the first complaint was handled. The commissioner has taken administrative action against the head of the station. Police have recovered Rs 25 lakh of the Rs 35 lakh allegedly robbed, while the remaining amount has not yet been accounted for.
