Passengers in the Pune division of Central Railway will now be able to buy travel insurance at very low cost. From October 27, 2026, passengers booking reserved tickets at Passenger Reservation System (PRS) counters can take the cover at a premium of just Rs 0.45 per passenger. The information was given from Pune on October 26, 2026.
The scheme is voluntary, which means it is up to the passenger whether to take the insurance. It will provide cover for death, permanent disability and specified treatment expenses in a railway accident or in specified untoward incidents, all as per the terms of the policy.
The facility will be available only on confirmed tickets. It will not apply to waiting-list tickets. Passengers can decide at the reservation counter itself, while booking the ticket, whether they want the insurance.
The maximum cover under the scheme is Rs 10 lakh in case of death, Rs 10 lakh for permanent total disability and Rs 7.5 lakh for permanent partial disability. Eligible hospitalisation expenses of up to Rs 2 lakh can be reimbursed. The cost of transporting the body is covered up to Rs 10,000. All these amounts are subject to the applicable terms of the policy.
Hemant Kumar Behera, public relations officer of Central Railway's Pune division, said the facility would give passengers one more option to take insurance protection while booking a ticket.
Behera said, "The scheme is voluntary and passengers can take an informed decision based on the needs of their journey. At a premium of Rs 0.45 per passenger, eligible passengers can take cover for the specified risks linked to railway accidents and specified untoward incidents. We urge passengers to understand the benefits, the exclusions and the terms of the policy before deciding. Our staff at the reservation counters will give passengers the necessary information."
To implement the scheme, the division is making arrangements at the PRS counters. These include a provision for putting the required stamp on the reservation form. Reservation supervisors and counter staff have been told to first understand the scheme thoroughly themselves and to guide passengers who ask for information.
The insurance policy will cover only the risks and expenses written in its terms. Passengers who take the facility have been advised to read the policy carefully before going ahead.
Issuing the policy and settling claims will be the responsibility of the insurance company concerned. Passengers will have to approach the insurance company directly for any claim under the policy.
