Pune, October 24, 2026: Pune traffic police have withdrawn the weekend exemption given to heavy vehicles on Shivaji Road and Bajirao Road. The decision comes into effect from October 25. The aim is to reduce crowding and congestion during Diwali shopping and to keep pedestrians safe.
The restriction will remain in force until the Diwali festival ends. The order was issued on Saturday by Dr Sandeep Bhajibhakare, Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic), Pune city. Heavy vehicles will now be barred from the area that sees the most activity during the festival.
DCP Bhajibhakare said, "The permission for heavy vehicles to ply on Shivaji Road and Bajirao Road on Saturdays and Sundays from October 25, 2026 until the end of Diwali is being withdrawn. Entry of heavy vehicles on these roads will remain closed."
The decision was taken because large crowds are expected at major shopping areas such as Laxmi Road, Kumthekar Road, Kelkar Road and Tulshibaug. The number of shoppers passing through these busy markets during the festival days is expected to rise further.
The order states that stopping the weekend exemption is necessary on these two important roads linking the market areas, to keep traffic smooth, prevent jams and protect pedestrians.
DCP Bhajibhakare said, "This decision is being taken to prevent traffic jams, ensure the safety of citizens, manage traffic effectively and keep movement easy in the market areas."
Heavy vehicles will not be seen on these two roads on Saturdays and Sundays until Diwali, so that shoppers can move around the markets without trouble.
