The Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority has begun work on parking at eight locations on the metro network and has approached municipal corporations for land.

Pune, November 4, 2026: Metro stations have no designated parking, so commuters have begun parking their two-wheelers and cars on roadsides and under the metro viaduct. The practice is growing. In view of this, the Pune Metropolitan Region Development Authority (PMRDA) has begun work on a plan to build parking at eight locations across the metro network.

Land is needed for these facilities, and the PMRDA has approached the municipal corporations concerned to seek it. PMRDA Commissioner Dr Abhijeet Chaudhari said that work on arranging parking has begun at two of the eight identified sites. The process for the remaining sites will be taken up later.

The parking problem has become more visible since the Pimpri Chinchwad-Swargate metro corridor started operating. Public bus services linking residential areas with metro stations are inadequate, so many commuters drive to the station. With no organised parking, they leave their vehicles on the roadside or under the viaduct. This obstructs traffic and adds to the crowding around the stations.

Chaudhari said the authority is also working to improve last-mile connectivity so that commuters have to depend less on private vehicles.

He said, "Efforts are being made to meet commuters' parking needs and spare them the trouble. We have identified eight sites where a parking facility can be considered. We will also work towards providing last-mile connectivity."

The PMRDA believes that organised parking and better public transport connectivity to metro stations will encourage more people to travel by metro. This will also help ease crowding around the stations.
