A 40-year-old head constable of the anti-narcotics squad of the Pimpri Chinchwad police died of a heart attack on Sunday night, October 25. A raid was under way in Sant Tukaram Nagar on people allegedly selling MD (mephedrone). During the raid one suspect started running, and the head constable's condition worsened as he chased him.

The deceased was Javed Rafique Bagsiraj. He lived in the Morwadi area of Pimpri. The police had received information that two people were coming to the area to sell MD. Bagsiraj passed the information to his seniors and, along with his team, laid a trap.

The squad caught the first suspect near an internal housing society in the area. The second suspect, however, ran away and Bagsiraj ran after him. The first accused had been caught only a short while earlier. While chasing the second man, Bagsiraj suddenly collapsed. Just before falling, he had complained of severe chest pain.

His colleagues took him to the Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation's YCM Hospital. There he suffered cardiac arrest again and died.

Bagsiraj joined the Pune city police in 2010. He spent his first eight years at Hadapsar and Mundhwa police stations. When the Pimpri Chinchwad Police Commissionerate was formed in 2018, he moved to the new force and served at Pimpri police station. He was later posted to the crime branch, and at the time of his death he was working with the anti-narcotics squad.

His last rites were performed with state honours on Monday at a crematorium in Kasba Peth, Pune.

Bagsiraj is survived by his parents, brother and wife. He also leaves two children, a 12-year-old daughter and a seven-year-old son.
