Javed Bagsiraj, a 38-year-old constable with the anti-narcotics cell of the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police, died of a heart attack while on duty. He was chasing a fleeing suspect when his health deteriorated. The incident took place late on Sunday night, October 25, in the Sant Tukaram Nagar area.

Bagsiraj had received information that two suspects were coming to Sant Tukaram Nagar to sell MD (mephedrone) drugs. He immediately passed the information to his senior officers. The anti-narcotics cell of the Crime Branch then laid a trap near Antra Society.

One suspect who had come to sell drugs was caught on the spot by the team. His accomplice, however, escaped the police in the dark and began to run. Bagsiraj fearlessly ran after him.

During the chase, he suddenly felt a sharp pain in his chest and fell to the ground. His fellow policemen promptly took him to the Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial (YCM) Hospital in Pimpri. While he was being treated there, he suffered a second severe heart attack and died.

Bagsiraj's family was originally from Karnataka. His father had settled in Pune, and Bagsiraj was born in Pune. He joined the Pune city police in 2010 and worked at the Hadapsar and Mundhwa police stations for his first eight years. When the Pimpri-Chinchwad Police Commissionerate was created as a separate force in 2018, he moved to it. After serving at the Pimpri police station, he was posted to the Crime Branch, where he was working with great diligence in the anti-narcotics cell.

He is survived by his mother, father, brother, wife, a 12-year-old daughter and a 7-year-old son. His sudden death has plunged the Bagsiraj family into grief, and there is deep sorrow in the Pimpri-Chinchwad police force as well.

He was laid to rest with state honours at the graveyard in Kasba Peth, Pune, on the afternoon of Monday, October 26.
