Pune, October 24, 2026: Puneites waiting to know when the Hinjewadi-Shivajinagar Metro will open to passengers may have to wait longer. Prime Minister Narendra Modi's proposed visit to Baramati on November 3 is said to have been postponed. The Metro was expected to be inaugurated during that visit.

The 23.2-km elevated route connects Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. With the visit put off, fresh uncertainty has arisen over its inauguration. No official date for the inauguration has been announced yet.

The route has been built through a public-private partnership and will link the IT hub in Hinjewadi with Shivajinagar. Work on all 17 stations on the route is complete. Twenty Metro coaches and about 90 train operators are also said to be ready for service. Much of the preparation needed to begin actual service appears to be in place.

More than 10 trial runs are being held every day to check train timings, stops at stations and travel time. However, the route can open to passengers only after the required safety clearances are obtained and operational readiness is complete. Even if preparations appear done, passengers cannot board the Metro until these two things are in place.

The Metro is expected to cut travel time considerably for IT employees who commute daily between Hinjewadi and Shivajinagar. It should also help ease traffic congestion on this busy route. Working people who travel between the two places every day have high hopes of the Metro.

The inauguration had been expected during Modi's proposed Baramati visit. With the visit likely to be postponed, the question of when passenger service will begin has come up again. No official announcement has been made about the Prime Minister's revised programme or the date of the Metro's inauguration. In short, although the Metro is largely prepared, nothing has been announced about a date.
