The Youth Olympic Games 2026 opened in Dakar with Senegal's president declaring them open, and India has sent 17 athletes who are expected to win medals.
The Youth Olympic Games 2026 have begun in Senegal, the first time an Olympic event is being held on the African continent. Senegal's President Bassirou Diomaye Faye officially declared the Games open. The historic ceremony marks the start of a new era in African sport. Seventeen Indian athletes are taking part and are expected to win medals.
The opening ceremony was held at the Stade Abdoulaye Wade in Dakar. Hundreds of young athletes from different countries represented their nations in the march past. The programme offered glimpses of Africa's rich past, present and future. Senegal's tradition of "teranga", or hospitality, drew particular praise.
Through three symbolic characters named Alkebulan, Keb and Cito, the ceremony showed how cultural heritage passes from one generation to the next. It also conveyed how important young people are in shaping Africa's future.
International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Kirsty Coventry praised the historic occasion. She said she was proud that the African continent was welcoming the Olympic movement for the first time.
Coventry said, "This is the Africa I am so proud of. I am eager to introduce the world to Africa. As a Zimbabwean and as an African woman, I feel especially proud at this historic moment."
She also said sport had created many opportunities in her life and inspired her to believe in herself. She urged every athlete at the Games to believe in themselves, dream big and give their best.
The Youth Olympic Games 2026 will be held from October 31 to November 13 in three cities: Dakar, Saly and Diamniadio. A total of 2,655 young athletes from delegations of 205 countries are taking part across 25 sports.
India has sent a team of 17 athletes, 11 women and six men. The Indian athletes will compete in 11 sports.
India has won a total of 23 medals in the past three Youth Olympics: 3 gold, 16 silver and four bronze. Indian athletes have also won four more medals in mixed-NOC events, in which athletes from different countries compete together, but these are not counted in India's official medal tally.
India's best performance at the Youth Olympics came in Buenos Aires in 2018, when it won 13 medals in all: three gold, nine silver and one bronze. Sports fans are watching to see whether India's young athletes can surpass that performance in Senegal.
