Yawal's Rs 56.03 crore water supply scheme half done, water targeted by February-March
Work on Yawal's Rs 56.03 crore water supply scheme is about 50 per cent complete, and civic leaders aim to supply water from the Shelgaon source next February-March.
Work on the water supply scheme sanctioned for Yawal town is under way on a war footing. The scheme, being built under the Maharashtra Suvarna Jayanti Nagarotthan Mahaabhiyan, costs Rs 56.03 crore and about 50 per cent of the work is complete.
The scheme received administrative approval on October 15, 2024. The work order was issued on May 23, 2025 to the contractors, M/s SCIPL and Sandeep Construction, Gangakhed. Municipal council president Chhaya Atul Patil shared details of the scheme.
The water source is at the Shelgaon barrage on the Tapi river, near Takarkheda village. A five-metre-diameter intake well, two inspection wells and an eight-metre-diameter jack well will be built there. A 200-metre approach bund and a 600-metre approach road are also to be built.
A 600 mm diameter pipeline is being laid to carry river water from the intake well to the jack well. The approach bund is complete, while work on the jack well and intake well continues on a war footing. A 250 HP pump is being installed to send water from the jack well to the water treatment plant. A 190 kV solar plant will also be set up to save on electricity costs.
An 8 km pipeline of 400 mm diameter is to be laid from the jack well to the treatment plant, of which 4.10 km is done. The scheme includes a modern 11 million litre capacity treatment plant, a pre-settling tank, a system for cleaning filter beds and reuse of water. A 120 kV solar plant will also be set up at the plant. Work on the plant is 45 per cent complete. Of the 57 km distribution pipeline, 21 km has been laid.
Treated water will be sent through 60 HP pumps to the 22 lakh litre Sane Guruji water tank and through 50 HP pumps to the 10 lakh litre Shriram Nagar water tank.
Former municipal council president and current councillor Atul Patil said the scheme was conceived in 2021 with the idea that every person should get 135 litres of water, assuming the population in 2056. He said the dream now appeared to be coming true. He said the scheme costs Rs 56 crore but only Rs 7.5 crore has been received so far, and 50 per cent of the work has been done with that funding.
According to Atul Patil, earlier there were conventional filters and silt had to be removed by hand, but at the new plant silt will be removed mechanically. He said, "I am confident that next February-March we will be able to supply water to the city from this new Shelgaon scheme."
Engineer Anuradha Patil said the work on the scheme is progressing on the administration's part and efforts are on to complete it as soon as possible under the Maharashtra Suvarna Jayanti Nagarotthan. She said there was a minor hurdle on the route, which would be resolved quickly.
Councillor Atul Patil, water supply engineer Anuradha Patil, Dadu Dhotre, Jain and Sumit of the PMC were present during council president Chhaya Patil's inspection visit. Councillors Sagar Chaudhari and Parag Saraf, Umar Kachchi, Karim Manyar, Shiv Sena taluka chief Sharad Koli, town chief Jagdish Kavadiwale, Santosh Dhobi, Yogesh Patil, Pappu Joshi, Faruk Haji, Narendra Shinde, Bhushan Khaire, Kishor Mali and journalists also accompanied them.
