What an IAS officer trainee takes home in pay during training at LBSNAA in Mussoorie
Trainee IAS officers draw a basic pay of Rs 56,100 a month, but deductions at the academy bring the in-hand amount to about Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000.
After clearing the UPSC examination and being selected for the Indian Administrative Service (IAS), every trainee is curious about how much they will be paid during training. For many people, becoming an IAS officer is a big dream, which adds to the interest in the question.
Officers take their training at the Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) in Mussoorie, Uttarakhand. Here is a simple account of the pay and other financial benefits officers receive during training at the academy.
Under the 7th Pay Commission, IAS officers are paid according to Pay Level 10 when they begin training. On this basis, an IAS officer's basic pay is Rs 56,100 a month throughout the training period.
However, basic pay and the amount that reaches the hand are not the same. The amount actually received is somewhat different. During training at the academy, officers have to pay mess bills, hostel expenses and other charges. After these deductions, trainees generally receive Rs 35,000 to Rs 40,000 as stipend or in-hand pay.
Despite some deductions during their stay at the academy, the government provides them with good accommodation, security and other training-related facilities free or at subsidised rates.
The picture changes once the academy training is over and officers go on field postings or for district training. They then receive additional benefits such as dearness allowance (DA), house rent allowance (HRA) and travel allowance (TA) along with basic pay, which raises the total pay.
