With petrol and diesel costs rising, people are leaning towards electric cars. Luxury carmaker Volvo has introduced its new electric SUV, the Volvo EX90, in the Indian market. Volvo Car India unveiled the all-electric luxury SUV on October 12, 2026. It is the company's first software-defined electric car in India.

The vehicle has a 106 kWh lithium-ion battery and a twin-motor setup. According to the company, it has a maximum output of 335 kW, or 456 horsepower, and produces 670 Nm of torque. The SUV can go from 0 to 100 kmph in just 5.5 seconds.

The company has given two range figures. The WLTP range is about 625 km, while the ICAT range is up to 725 km. The range actually achieved on the road can vary with driving style, weather, road conditions, speed and use of the air conditioner. Customers should therefore remember that these figures are based on test standards.

The car's key feature is its Software Defined Vehicle (SDV) technology, in which many of the vehicle's digital features and systems are controlled by software. Over The Air (OTA) updates can bring software improvements directly to the vehicle. As a result, the need to visit a service centre for some future improvements may be reduced.

For safety, the EX90 has 5 cameras, 5 radars and 12 ultrasonic sensors. It also includes a 360-degree camera, Pilot Assist, Adaptive Cruise Control and collision-avoidance systems. The car also has Occupant Sensing technology, which detects whether passengers are present in the vehicle. However, all this technology is meant to assist the driver, and responsibility for safe driving remains with the driver.

The cabin has a 14.5-inch central touchscreen that supports Google Maps and several features of the Google ecosystem. Wireless Apple CarPlay and OTA updates are also available. The vehicle has 6 seats, with separate captain seats in the second row. The third-row seats make travel easier for a family, and the rear seats can be folded down to create more luggage space when needed.

Other premium features include a four-zone Climate Control System, ventilated Nappa leather seats, backlit wood trim and a Panoramic Electrochromic Sunroof. There is also a Bowers & Wilkins sound system with 25 speakers and 1,610 watts of audio output, with Dolby Atmos and Abbey Road Studios modes.

The Volvo EX90 comes in six exterior colours: Denim Blue, Sand Dune, Mulberry Red, Crystal White, Onyx Black and Vapour Grey. The vehicle is 5,037 mm long, 2,113 mm wide including mirrors, and 1,744 mm high. Bi-directional charging is also available, allowing energy to be shared with compatible devices if the necessary infrastructure is in place.

The starting ex-showroom price of the Volvo EX90 in the Indian market has been stated as Rs 1.26 crore. This price applies to customers who book by December 31, 2026. The company's declared offers include an 11 kW wall-box charger, a three-year service package and a 65% buyback offer after three years. Conditions and eligibility may apply to these offers, so it would be advisable to get full details from an authorised Volvo dealer before booking.

According to the company's plan, customers are expected to get the chance to experience and test drive the EX90 in November 2026. Deliveries are planned to begin in January 2027. Volvo has also given a glimpse of its upcoming luxury electric sedan, the ES90. Price, offers, technical details and the delivery schedule should be checked against the company's official announcements before booking.
