According to Vastu Shastra, broken utensils, medicines, empty containers, a mirror facing the stove, cleaning tools and stale food are best kept off the kitchen platform.

According to Vastu Shastra, the kitchen is linked to a home's happiness, prosperity and well-being. It is believed that the things kept in the kitchen, and the way they are arranged, affect the atmosphere of the house. Vastu Shastra holds that some items should not be kept in the kitchen.

It is believed that clutter in the kitchen can affect a household's prosperity and cause money troubles. Some people also link it to wasteful spending and a lack of savings. It is therefore advised that the kitchen platform always be kept clean and tidy. Oil, food or water spilled on the platform should be wiped up at once. Here are the items that, according to Vastu Shastra, should not be kept on the platform.

First, broken utensils. Keeping broken or cracked utensils in the kitchen is considered inauspicious. They are regarded as a symbol of lack and negativity, and such utensils are said to obstruct a home's happiness and prosperity. Utensils that are no longer usable should be thrown away rather than stored.

Second, medicines. Many people keep medicines in the kitchen near the gas stove. According to Vastu, it is better to keep the cooking area separate from medicines. In practical terms too, medicines should not be kept in the kitchen, to protect them from heat.

Third, empty containers. Empty containers of flour, rice, pulses and spices should not be left on the platform for long. Grain is regarded as a symbol of prosperity and plentiful resources. It is better to remove empty containers and keep the platform clean and tidy.

Fourth, a mirror. According to Vastu Shastra, the kitchen is associated with the fire element. Placing a mirror in front of the stove, which reflects the flame, is considered improper. It is said to upset the balance of the fire element and lead to wasteful spending. Care should therefore be taken over the direction and position of any mirror in the kitchen.

Fifth, cleaning items. Cleaning cloths, brushes and other tools should not be left on the platform after use. This can make the kitchen untidy and affect the cooking area. According to Vastu Shastra, a clean and tidy kitchen is associated with a positive atmosphere.

Lastly, stale food and expired spices. Keeping spoiled or old items in the kitchen is said to increase the flow of negative energy.
