Four places in India have recently been added to UNESCO's Tentative List. They include ancient caves, temples and forts. The list also carries a proposal covering sites linked to Mahatma Gandhi's Satyagraha.
The first is the Udayagiri caves in Madhya Pradesh, regarded as extremely ancient and historically significant. Twenty rock-cut caves can be seen here, with old sculptures and inscriptions. The surrounding area is also scenic. The caves are said to have been built around the fourth and fifth centuries. Their ancient carvings and cave architecture make them unique.
The second is the Bagh caves of Madhya Pradesh, located near the Bagni river in the Vindhya range. Nine rock-cut Buddhist caves have been made here. Their walls bear ancient paintings that offer a glimpse of life in that period, from people's clothing to dance and music. This is why the Bagh caves are considered special.
The third is the Ginnorgarh fort in Madhya Pradesh, which has also been included in the UNESCO list. The fort was once the main stronghold of the Raj Gond rulers. Built in hilly terrain, it is known for its ancient history, and visitors can learn about the Raj Gond rulers here.
The fourth is a group of three ancient temples in the Chambal valley, also in Madhya Pradesh. The temples are named as Bateshwar, Padavali and Kakanmath. Their walls have very fine and beautiful carvings, and the temples reflect the art and construction style of their time. All three temples have now been included in UNESCO's Tentative List.
The list also includes a special proposal for sites linked to Mahatma Gandhi's Satyagraha. It covers nine sites in all, two in South Africa and seven in India. Gandhi spent 21 years of his life in South Africa, and Satyagraha began during that time. After returning to India, he carried the movement forward. The proposal includes Sabarmati Ashram, Mani Bhavan, Gandhi Smriti and Sevagram.
