Police have uncovered startling information in their probe into the armed attack on Baramati industrialist Rana Dilip Suryavanshi. They suspect a contract of Rs 2 lakh was given to attack Suryavanshi. Parth Vasudev Avthale (19) and Dnyandev Mahadev Shinde (50) have been arrested in the case.
A minor has also been detained. The incident has caused a stir in business circles in Baramati and surrounding areas.
According to police, the attack took place at around 7.30 pm on October 18 on the Palkhi Mahamarg, in front of Pilot Dhaba. A case was registered at Baramati Taluka police station on October 19 on the complaint of Laxmikant Mahadev Suryavanshi.
After the attack, police intensified their search for the accused. Pune city police detained Parth Avthale and a minor, and both were later handed over to Pune rural police.
Police said questioning and technical investigation showed that Dnyandev Shinde gave Rs 2 lakh for the attack. On this basis, both men were arrested. A court has remanded them in police custody till October 23.
According to preliminary information from the investigation, Suryavanshi had come to the Baramati area with his convoy. Two men on a motorcycle then introduced themselves as his fans and expressed a wish to be photographed with him. Using this pretext, one of the attackers came close and drew a pistol.
The pistol is said to have jammed, so no shot was fired. When Suryavanshi then resisted, the attacker struck him with a sharp weapon, the investigation has found.
A police bodyguard present at the spot tried to catch the accused. In the scuffle, one of the accused bit him on the hand, and the accused fled.
Rana Suryavanshi is the owner of Rana Shipping Company, and his business extends to Goa as well as Maharashtra. Police are investigating the real motive for the attack, the nature of the Rs 2 lakh transaction and whether anyone else was involved in the crime. Police Inspector Narayan Pawar of Baramati Taluka police station is handling further investigation.
