The trailer of 'Sumo Didi', a film on the extraordinary journey of Hetal Dave, India's first professional woman sumo wrestler, has been released. Hindi Zee 5 put out the trailer. The film tells the story of a woman who turns into her greatest strength what the world regards as her limit.
The film is presented by Jio Studios, Fresh Lime Films and MA+TH Entertainment Networks. Its producers are Jyoti Deshpande, Aakash Chawla, Arunava Sengupta and Amit Chandra. It is directed by Jayant Rohatgi. Shriyam Bhagnani plays the lead, with Chaitanya Sharma also seen in the film. Anubha Fatehpuria, Nitesh Pandey, Raghav Dheer and Meenal Kapoor are also part of the cast. The film was shot on real locations in Japan, Kolkata and Mumbai.
The film has already found a place at well-known international festivals such as the Tokyo International Film Festival and the Palm Springs International Film Festival. 'Sumo Didi' will be available to watch only on Hindi Zee 5 from October 23, 2026.
The story is about a woman who does not let society decide her future. In the unusual world of sumo wrestling, Hetal finds her purpose. She then sets out on a journey that challenges the way women, their bodies and their abilities are seen. Shriyam Bhagnani plays the difficult role of Hetal Dave and brings her courage and emotional journey alive on screen.
The film follows Hetal's journey to fulfil an unusual dream. It also explores the obstacles along the way and the strength needed to carve out an identity beyond society's expectations. It talks, too, about the pressures women face to fit set moulds of how they should look, behave and be. It also shows the stubborn resolve needed to rise above those expectations. It is a story of believing in oneself, persevering and having the courage to challenge rules that confine.
Shriyam Bhagnani said, "This is my first film in a lead role, and because the character is complex, I felt a big responsibility. When I began, the journey felt like a steep climb, and I still cannot believe the film is releasing this month. Playing Hetal Dave has been one of the most challenging and satisfying experiences of my life. Her journey is not just about becoming a sumo wrestler; it is about learning to believe in yourself when the world keeps telling you that you are different."
Shriyam added, "Preparing for this role tested me both physically and emotionally, and it also changed the way I look at strength and perseverance. Even after the shoot ended, Hetal's story stayed with me, and I am glad the trailer is now out. I hope audiences get to know her journey, draw inspiration from it and carry a little of her courage with them. The film reaches viewers on Hindi Zee 5 on October 23, so I am very excited."
Hetal Dave, whose journey the film portrays, said, "I think many of us have been told at some point in life that we are very different, that we should change something about ourselves, or that a particular dream is not for us. There were many such moments in my sumo wrestling journey, but this same journey also taught me to believe in myself and keep moving forward."
Hetal also said, "What makes 'Sumo Didi' special is that the film goes beyond sport to explore what it means to stand by your choices when the world wants you to become something else. I am grateful to Hindi Zee 5 for bringing this story to audiences, and I hope it inspires people to embrace their true selves and pursue what matters to them."
