Police have raided a gambling den in the limits of Shegaon police station, in the Warora area of Chandrapur district. Gambling was being run from a tarpaulin shed built near a pond in the fields of Jamni. Shegaon police raided the spot in the afternoon of October 6, 2026. Three accused were arrested, while three others fled.

According to police, Sub-Inspector Sumit Kamble was out on patrol in the station's limits that afternoon with colleagues in a private vehicle. They then received reliable information from an informer that some people had put up a tarpaulin shed near the pond in Jamni village and were gambling for money on a game of 52 playing cards. Acting on this, police immediately took independent witnesses along, reached the spot stealthily in the afternoon and raided it.

The sudden raid caused a stampede among the gamblers. Police caught Mahesh Gomaji Awari (28, resident of Chichghat, Chimur tehsil), Kailas Vasudeo Alam (40, resident of Jamni, Chimur tehsil) and Ganesh Anandrao Pendam (34, resident of Jamni, Chimur tehsil). Police said the other three accused escaped by taking advantage of the darkness and the situation.

The arrested accused and the gambling stakes were examined in front of the witnesses. Cash of Rs 1,600 and 52 playing cards were found on the stakes and in the search of the accused. Five old two-wheelers were also seized, bearing the numbers MH 31 BS 8286, MH 32 R 8179, MH 34 AJ 8721, MH 34 AQ 7927 and MH 34 CITY 7135. Goods worth Rs 2,91,630 in all were seized.

On the complaint of Sub-Inspector Sumit Ishwar Kamble, Shegaon police have registered a case against both the arrested and the absconding accused under Section 12(A) of the Maharashtra Prevention of Gambling Act. Assistant Sub-Inspector Ishwar Gaikwad is conducting further investigation under the guidance of station house officer Yogendrasing Yadav.
