Reports of local opposition to the Ring Metro being built within Thane city have surfaced from time to time, but an important update on the project has now emerged. The Ring Metro will now connect directly to major cities such as Mumbai, Bhiwandi and Kalyan. Under this plan, the Thane Ring Metro will be linked to Metro Line 4 (Wadala-Kasarvadavali) and Metro Line 5 (Kapurbawdi-Bhiwandi-Kalyan).

This means Thane residents will not only find it easier to travel within the city, but by changing trains at designated stations, they will also be able to travel to Mumbai, Bhiwandi and Kalyan without interruption.

The project, aimed at giving Thane residents a reliable public transport option, originated from an idea of Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and is being implemented through Maha Metro. The cost of the project has been put at around Rs 12,200 crore.

In recent days, some areas of Thane, including Lokmanya Nagar, saw opposition over displacement and the metro route. In response, Maha Metro has launched a large scale awareness campaign to address people's concerns. A plan has also been prepared to connect this metro network with other major routes in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region.

Under this plan, Metro Line 4 will be linked to a Ring Metro station in the Dongripada area, giving Thane residents metro connectivity towards Mumbai via Balkum Naka. Connection to Line 5 will allow passengers to travel directly towards Bhiwandi and Kalyan as well. This is expected to reduce the burden of private vehicles on the city's roads.

Commuters travelling to Mumbai, Bhiwandi or Kalyan currently face difficulty due to heavy traffic jams at Ghodbunder Road, Teen Hath Naka and Kapurbawdi Chowk. Once the Ring Metro network is linked to Metro Lines 4 and 5, passengers will be able to change trains under a single ticketing system and travel across the entire Mumbai Metropolitan Region. Work on the project, expected to become the backbone of Thane's public transport, is now being pushed forward at a fast pace.

According to senior Maha Metro officials, the Thane Ring Metro project is safe, comfortable and time saving, and essential for the city's overall development. The route will give Thane's inner areas strong connectivity, and the link to Metro Line 5 at Balkum Naka will give commuters another route to Bhiwandi and Kalyan. Officials said the entire project was prepared after a detailed study and that its detailed project report is available on the official Thane Ring Metro website for the public to view. They said discussions are continuing with people who have concerns or questions, and that Maha Metro remains fully committed to completing the project on schedule.
