The SUV, which could launch between 2027 and 2028, is designed for families and will sit between the Nexon EV and the Sierra EV.
Tata Motors is preparing to strengthen its hold on the electric vehicle (EV) market. The company is working on a new mid-size electric SUV with the internal codename "Kuno" (Tata Kuno EV). The car could be launched in the Indian market between 2027 and 2028.
The SUV will be about 4.3 metres long. In Tata's upcoming portfolio, it will slot between the Nexon and the Sierra, that is, right between the popular Nexon EV and the upcoming Sierra EV. Its direct rival will be the MG Windsor EV.
The new SUV is being designed with family car buyers in mind. It will combine coupe SUV styling with a lifestyle look. Kuno is likely to blend the coupe SUV styling of the company's Curvv with the lifestyle look of the Sierra.
Until now, most Tata vehicles have been built on platforms that can handle both ICE (petrol-diesel) and EV powertrains. Kuno, however, will be built entirely on a dedicated electric platform called Acti.ev, the company's advanced platform.
Because it is a dedicated EV platform, engineers will have considerably more open space for the battery, motor and cabin layout. This could give occupants more legroom and a larger boot space for luggage. More comfort and space for passengers has been indicated.
The vehicle will focus on a comfortable ride, cabin space and practicality for everyday use, so that occupants do not feel fatigued even on long journeys.
According to preliminary reports on range, the top variant of the Kuno EV is expected to run more than 450 km on a single full charge.
On the battery pack, the company's other vehicles are offered with a 55 kWh pack in the Curvv EV and packs of 65 kWh to 75 kWh in the Sierra EV. Kuno is therefore very likely to use the same proven, advanced technology. However, the exact battery pack has not yet been officially announced.
On features, given what customers want today, the car could include several modern features. These include a large touchscreen infotainment system, a fully digital instrument cluster and a panoramic sunroof to give the cabin an open, airy feel. On safety, Level-2 ADAS (advanced driver assistance system) is mentioned. Automatic climate control, connected car technology and multiple airbags could also be offered.
