September 2026 was a month of both excitement and debate in the academic world. Prominent educational institutions across the country stayed in the national spotlight for different reasons. Some celebrated a centenary, some saw student politics heat up, and some campuses were tense over safety concerns and rumours. Here is a look at the month's main developments.

The month began with the centenary celebrations of Shri Ram College of Commerce (SRCC) of Delhi University, known as one of the country's leading commerce colleges. Prime Minister Narendra Modi attended the centenary event on September 5. He reached the college by Delhi Metro like an ordinary commuter and chatted with young people during the journey. On the occasion, he also released a special commemorative coin of Rs 100.

In the middle of the month, politics in the capital heated up over the Delhi University Students' Union (DUSU) elections. In this election, the ABVP established its dominance over the central posts.

Around the same time, students of Lady Shri Ram College (LSR) in South Delhi took an assertive stand on safety. They held a large march over serious concerns that lighting outside the campus is inadequate and there is no police patrolling. For security reasons, online classes had to be ordered there for some time.

In the last week of September, two big private institutions in Punjab, Lovely Professional University (LPU) and Chitkara University, came into the news. Unverified and misleading rumours spread on social media and led to sudden anger among students. Fierce protests began on the campuses, and a large police deployment was needed to keep the situation under control. The administration rejected the rumours and all the claims, but holidays were declared for some time as a security measure.

September was extremely tense at IIT Bombay, a prestigious technical institution. The suicide of Sahil Wakode shook the entire campus and students expressed intense anger. Students demanded a thorough inquiry into the case. They also demanded action against the institute's director and the professors concerned. In view of the growing anger and tension, the IIT Bombay administration had to postpone the mid-semester examinations for the time being.

In short, the month saw a centenary celebration in one place, an election and a march in another, protests over rumours elsewhere, and tension severe enough to halt examinations at yet another campus.
