Central Railway's local services, often called Mumbai's lifeline, were thrown off schedule on the morning of 26 October 2026 by a technical fault. The signal system developed problems at two places on the suburban line, directly affecting local trains.
According to information from Central Railway's control room, one fault is between Thane and Mulund stations and the other between Kanjurmarg and Bhandup stations. As a result, local travel in Mumbai has slowed. The incident was reported at 10.55 am.
The fault has affected local trains on the fast and slow lines in both the up and down directions. Trains on these routes are being run at low speed for now. The timetable has been disrupted, and many trains are running 20 to 52 minutes behind schedule. Commuters who left for work in the morning are facing considerable hardship.
The railway administration has begun repair work at both locations to fix the signal faults. It is hoped that local services will resume as before once the problem is fixed.
Separately, another wire was found snagged in the overhead wires of the slow line between Mulund and Thane stations. The railway then prepared for repairs. An overhead wire block was taken from 10 am for the work. Work is under way to remove the snagged wire and restore the system. With trains running slowly and a block also in place, the local timetable has been thrown into complete disarray.
According to information up to about 10 am, many local trains were running considerably late. Trains from Mulund towards Kalyan, Thane, Badlapur and Kasara were affected. The 9.20 am Kalyan local from Mulund was running 52 minutes late at Kanjurmarg. The 9.17 am Thane local was 43 minutes late between Mulund and Thane. The 9.40 am Kalyan AC local was 33 minutes late at Kanjurmarg.
The 9.40 am Thane fast local was 31 minutes late at Kanjurmarg, the 9.47 am Thane local 29 minutes late at Vikhroli, and the 9.45 am Badlapur local 27 minutes late at Vikhroli. The 9.53 am Thane local was 24 minutes late at Vikhroli, the 9.57 am Kalyan local 21 minutes late at Vikhroli, and the 10.05 am Kasara local 14 minutes late at Diva.
Passengers on Central Railway's suburban line are facing delays because of the fault, and the railway faces the challenge of restoring local traffic to normal as soon as possible. In these conditions, commuters would do well to keep some extra time in hand for their journey.
