Political equations are shifting fast in the Satara District Central Cooperative Bank election. Signs are emerging that the strength of the faction led by Eknath Shinde is growing.

The candidature applications of Rajendra Rajapure and Rupali Rajapure of the Nationalist Congress Party from the Mahabaleshwar region have been rejected. The Rajapure couple suffered the setback during scrutiny of nominations. With this, the possibility of Sanjay Shinde being elected unopposed has arisen, and his path appears easy. However, an unopposed election will be final only if later developments in the poll go accordingly. Even so, the political message of these developments is clear: conditions are turning favourable for the Shinde faction in the fight for representation in the district bank.

Shekhar Gore's name is also being discussed. He is the brother of Rural Development Minister Jaykumar Gore and has recently joined the Shinde faction. He is now preparing to try his luck from the Maan Seva Society constituency. His candidature will therefore not remain limited to a single seat, but could also become a test of the Shinde faction's political influence in the district bank. In his contest, local leadership in the cooperative sector, the support of institutions and political coordination will all matter.

The election could also become a matter of prestige for Guardian Minister Shambhuraj Desai. Leaving behind memories of the defeat in the Datta panchavarshik, he appears ready to become active again in district bank politics. How much the Shinde faction benefits from his experience and political contacts will be important to watch.

On one side is the advantage Sanjay Shinde has gained from the rejection of the Rajapure couple's applications; on the other are Shekhar Gore's possible candidature and Shambhuraj Desai's activism. Together these are building an atmosphere in favour of the Shinde faction. But who will finally hold power in the district bank will depend on candidatures, vote management and behind-the-scenes political negotiations. So even if the present lead seems to give the Shinde faction confidence, the political moves of the cooperative sector will remain decisive until the final result.
