US Secretary of State Marco Rubio called reports that he would quit "baseless" and said he planned to serve alongside Donald Trump to the end of the term.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio has broken his silence on talk of his resignation, saying the reports are entirely baseless.

President Donald Trump and his Republican Party suffered a major political setback in the recent midterm elections. After losing their majority in both houses of Congress, talk of a wave of resignations at the White House has been growing.

Amid this, a report claimed that Rubio would leave office, exit the Trump administration and prepare for the 2028 presidential election. The report said Rubio had been exploring options to leave the administration after the midterm defeat. The news caused considerable stir in American political circles.

In an interview, Rubio rejected all these claims. Speaking in his White House office, he said: "To be honest, I really don't know where and how these things spread. I like my job very much. When people say I am about to quit my job, I find it funny and I ask, which job am I about to quit?"

Rubio added that it had always been his plan to work with Trump until the end of his full term.

The Republican Party's performance in the midterm elections was quite disappointing, and criticism of the administration and senior officials has since been growing. A few days ago, Harmeet Dhillon, head of the Civil Rights Division of the US Department of Justice, resigned. She is considered very close to Trump. These developments fuelled the talk of Rubio's resignation further.

Spokespersons for the US State Department and the White House have also rejected the reports outright, calling them a "baseless and imaginary conspiracy".

Rubio was also asked in the interview whether he would file nomination papers as a candidate in the 2028 US presidential election. He said plainly that he did not want to talk about 2028 politics for now.

There had also been reports of internal tension between Vice President JD Vance and Rubio over the 2028 candidacy. On this, Rubio said: "JD Vance is a very good friend of mine. If he decides to run for president in 2028, I will certainly support him."

After these clarifications, the talk about Rubio's resignation appears to have subsided for now.
