The 69.23-km corridor under MUTP-3B would give direct local services between Panvel and Vasai, but it still needs the Centre's approval.

A proposal of Rs 12,710 crore 82 lakh has been sent to the Union government for a direct suburban rail service between Panvel and Vasai, a step of significance for rail commuters in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region. The Panvel-Vasai suburban corridor is about 69.23 km long.

The project is planned under the Mumbai Urban Transport Project (MUTP-3B). If the Centre approves it, rail connectivity in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region is expected to improve further.

At present there is no direct suburban local for passengers travelling from Panvel towards Vasai-Virar. They have to change trains at Kurla, Dadar or another station to continue, which costs them time and effort.

The proposed corridor would help create a direct rail link between the eastern and western suburbs. Thousands of people who travel daily for work, business and education could get considerable relief in future. However, the project is only proposed for now. Approvals and further work must be completed before locals can actually run.

The key details are as follows. The total length is 69.23 km, the proposed cost is Rs 12,710 crore 82 lakh, and 17 stations are planned. Under MUTP-3B, about 28 km of the corridor will be elevated.

The route runs into highways, creeks and other geographical obstacles. In view of these, about 28 km of the line is planned as elevated, which will allow the route to be built in a more orderly way.

Residential colonies, industrial areas and commercial centres are expanding rapidly in Navi Mumbai, Bhiwandi and Vasai-Virar. Job opportunities are growing there, and so is the need for public transport. The Panvel-Vasai corridor could connect these areas to the suburban rail network more effectively.

The project is also expected to prove important for travel in the new urban areas developing as the third and fourth Mumbai. The route could also help ease traffic pressure on roads and widen travel options.

The Maharashtra government's infrastructure committee has already approved the project. The proposal of Rs 12,710 crore 82 lakh is now with the Union government. Only after the necessary administrative and financial approvals from the Centre and the Railway Ministry will the way be clear for the next steps and actual work.

Meanwhile, about 99 per cent of the work on the Panvel-Karjat suburban rail corridor is reported to be complete. As rail facilities expand in the Panvel area, commuters are also looking to the Panvel-Vasai route.

On the whole, the Panvel-Vasai rail corridor could become an important project for the region's future transport. For now, there is no firm information on the Centre's final approval, the start of construction or the date local services will begin. Mumbai's commuters will therefore be watching for the decisions ahead.
