The Asian Games 2026 are underway in Japan, but the tournament now faces the shadow of a natural disaster. A warning has been issued for an extremely powerful typhoon named Fung-wong. According to Japan's meteorological department, the typhoon is moving toward the coast at very high speed, raising a serious risk of heavy rain, storm winds, flooding and landslides in hilly areas. A red alert has been issued for the cities of Tokyo and Nagoya, causing concern among residents in these areas.

According to reports, at 10 am local time, Typhoon Fung-wong was centred just 100 kilometres southwest of Hachijojima island in the Izu island chain near Tokyo. The storm is moving north at a speed of 25 kilometres per hour. At this pace, it is expected to come closer to Japan's coastline within the next few hours.

Given the rising danger from the storm, the meteorological department and local administration have warned residents in coastal areas to stay alert. Due to the risk of flooding and possible landslides, people have been urged to move to safe locations immediately for their safety. The typhoon is also expected to significantly affect sea traffic and flight services, and passengers and local authorities have been asked to exercise caution.

According to the meteorological department, this is the 25th typhoon to have formed in and around Japan's maritime boundary this year. Given its high intensity, several provinces along the eastern coast, including Tokyo, have been placed on high alert. The typhoon is very likely to pass close to the Boso Peninsula in Chiba prefecture, east of Tokyo, between Monday evening and late night. The next few hours are being considered extremely critical for residents in this area.

Meanwhile, India has made a strong start at the ongoing Asian Games 2026 in Japan, winning well in several sporting events. The Indian team defeated Pakistan 3-0 in table tennis, bringing particular joy among Indian fans. India also secured a resounding 49-23 win over Japan in kabaddi. Attention is now on what impact the typhoon warning will have on these competitions.
