Railways set luggage limits for train classes, extra baggage draws fine
Indian Railways allows free luggage of up to 70 kg in first AC and as little as 35 kg in general class, with fines for excess unbooked baggage.
Indians travelling by train are often in the habit of carrying a lot of luggage. However, Indian Railways rules set a fixed limit on how much luggage can be carried free of cost in each class. The class in which a passenger has booked a ticket determines how much luggage they can carry, and not knowing this limit can cause trouble for a traveller.
Passengers travelling in first AC are allowed to carry up to 70 kg of luggage without any extra charge. Those holding a second AC, or two-tier, ticket can carry up to 50 kg of luggage. Railways allows comparatively more luggage in both these AC classes because these coaches are less crowded and have more space available.
For those travelling in sleeper class, the limit is 40 kg, which can be carried without any fee. Passengers travelling in the general coach, however, can carry only up to 35 kg of luggage free of charge. The general coach is always very crowded, which is why carrying more luggage is restricted there. This is the reason the limit in these coaches is kept lower compared to AC coaches.
Railways has also provided a way for passengers who have luggage beyond the set limit. Before the train departs, passengers must go to the "luggage office" at the station and get the extra luggage booked as a parcel. Once the luggage has been booked this way, it can be carried on the same train without any worry. In other words, even if the luggage exceeds the set limit, there is no obstacle if it is booked properly.
However, if a passenger tries to carry excess luggage without booking it and breaking the rules, and is caught, a substantial fine is recovered from them as per Railways rules. It is therefore sensible for passengers to carry only as much luggage as the set limit allows, and to get it booked at the luggage office in advance if needed. This makes the journey comfortable and does not inconvenience other passengers. In short, it is wise to know the luggage limit for one's class before travelling by train and to carry luggage accordingly.
