Prime Minister Narendra Modi said at the India Mobile Congress that mobiles and the internet have opened new routes to learning for children and poor families living in remote parts of the country. He said online learning reached a large number of students during Covid as well. By 2022, more than 500 crore learning sessions had been recorded on the DIKSHA platform.
According to Modi, the government's effort is to take every means of online education to the sections of society that need learning the most.
DIKSHA is a digital platform for QR codes in school textbooks, online codes, online learning and teacher training. It offers textbooks, videos, interactive material, courses and other digital educational content. It was built on the initiative of the NCERT under the Ministry of Education, in collaboration with the CIET, and was launched in 2017.
In simple terms, DIKSHA is a digital platform where students, teachers, parents and others concerned can find digital content related to learning. It is an important part of PM e-VIDYA and is used as "One Nation, One Digital Platform" for school education. It is not limited to one class or board. According to official information, DIKSHA carries digital learning material from primary school up to higher secondary level (K-12), including content linked to the NCERT, CBSE, NIOS and the boards of states and Union Territories.
Courses on the platform do not come from a single institution or a fixed set of categories. They can be searched and viewed in different ways. They cover student revision programmes, building teachers' capacity and professional development, across a range of subjects. A student can therefore find not only courses but also other digital material according to class and subject.
One of DIKSHA's most useful features is its energised textbooks with QR codes. Scanning the QR code in many textbooks with the DIKSHA app or portal opens digital content linked to that lesson, which may include videos, interactive material and other educational content. A student can directly view material linked to the chapter being read in the book, without searching for it separately on the internet.
DIKSHA can be used by students, teachers, parents, school heads, school officials and other users. However, eligibility and rules for joining are not the same for every course. The creator or mentor of a particular course can decide who may join it. Guest users who have not logged in can view a good deal of content on DIKSHA, but features such as formally enrolling in a course generally require registration and login.
