All 600 Zilla Parishad schools in Wardha district now have CCTV cameras, and the system is said to be working at 100 per cent. No Zilla Parishad school in the district has been left without the facility.
The State government decided to install CCTV cameras in schools for student safety after two young girls were sexually abused at a reputed school in Badlapur. Against that backdrop, work on installing cameras in Zilla Parishad schools in Wardha district also gathered pace.
Funds for the work were provided through the District Planning Committee. In the 2024-25 financial year, Rs 1.65 crore was sanctioned for installing CCTV in 400 Zilla Parishad schools in the district. In 2025-26, Rs 2 crore was made available for installing CCTV in another 500 schools.
Once the funds were received, the work was taken up on a war footing. The aim is to ensure the safety of students on school premises, keep watch on people entering and leaving the school, and prevent any untoward incident.
Cameras have been placed at the school entrance and other key points on the premises. Teachers and the administration can now keep track of movements in the school compound. With the facility in place in 600 schools in the district, it is being seen as an important step for student safety.
With cameras now installed in Zilla Parishad schools in rural areas as well, security there has been strengthened with the help of technology. Students, teachers and parents have all begun to feel safer because of the CCTV.
Earlier, some anti-social elements used to consume liquor and other intoxicants on school premises. With CCTV now in place in all Zilla Parishad schools, their high-handedness has been curbed considerably.
Seema Patil, Education Officer (Primary) at Wardha, said: "There are 600 Zilla Parishad schools. CCTV has been installed in all of them, keeping the government's guidelines at the centre. Through CCTV, the administration is trying to create a safe environment in schools and to keep a check on untoward incidents on school premises."
