Parmesan cheese has roughly 36 g of protein per 100 g, ahead of chicken breast, tuna, beef, almonds, tofu, eggs and lentils, according to TasteAtlas.

When it comes to boosting protein, most people think of chicken, fish, eggs and lentils. The food guide TasteAtlas recently listed a number of protein-rich foods in an Instagram post. The list includes a cheese that is often found in the refrigerator at home.

The cheese is Parmesan, which is made from cow's milk. It has a slightly salty, distinctive taste. It is often grated over pasta or added to salads, and some people also eat it in small pieces.

According to TasteAtlas's Instagram post, 100 g of Parmesan contains about 36 g of protein. In this comparison it is placed ahead of chicken breast, tuna, beef, almonds, tofu, eggs and lentils. Parmesan is a hard, long-grained cheese. Its flavour is mildly spicy, salty and savoury, and even a small amount can enhance a dish. It is usually eaten in small quantities, while chicken, fish and lentils can be eaten in larger amounts. Parmesan is also high in fat and sodium.

According to the TasteAtlas comparison, 100 g of chicken breast has about 32 g of protein, only 4 g less than Parmesan. Chicken breast is comparatively low in fat, especially when cooked without much oil. It can easily be included in salads, sandwiches, wraps and everyday meals.

Fish is also described as a good source of protein. Cooked bluefin tuna typically has about 30 g of protein per 100 g. It can be grilled or lightly seared, and is also used in salads and other dishes. For meat eaters, beef skirt steak is another option, cooked over high heat and cut into thin slices. According to TasteAtlas, 100 g of grilled beef has about 29 g of protein.

Almonds can be an option for vegetarians. 100 g of raw almonds has about 21 g of protein, along with fibre and healthy fats. Almonds are high in calories, so eating them in limited quantities is advised. Tofu is made from soybeans and is described as beneficial for those who do not eat meat or fish. 100 g of plain, uncooked firm tofu has about 17 g of protein. Tofu readily absorbs the flavours of spices and sauces, so it can be added to curries, vegetables or grilled dishes.

Eggs are an easy way to add protein to everyday meals. 100 g of boiled eggs provides about 13 g of protein. They can be eaten at breakfast or added to salads and sandwiches. Along with protein, eggs supply several essential nutrients.

Lentils are used daily in Indian cooking. Along with protein, they are a good source of fibre. According to TasteAtlas, 100 g of cooked, drained lentils has about 9 g of protein. They can be eaten as dal, soup, salad and khichdi.
