Chicken is considered a high-protein food. It gives the body protein, vitamin B12, zinc and selenium, among other nutrients. But if a person eats only chicken for a whole month and gives up fruit, vegetables, grains, pulses and everything else, the body's nutritional balance can be upset.

At first, the stomach may feel full. Higher protein intake also helps muscles recover. Even so, such a diet is not considered balanced over a long period.

The effect of high protein can be understood this way. Chicken has a good amount of protein, and the body needs protein to repair and build muscle. If someone's diet was low in protein earlier and they start eating chicken, they may feel full for longer, which reduces frequent hunger. Grilled, boiled or lightly cooked chicken is a healthy source of protein.

On the other hand, fried chicken, or chicken in a gravy made with a lot of oil, butter or cream, adds calories and saturated fat. Eating only chicken provides plenty of protein, but the body also needs carbohydrates for energy. If the diet has very little carbohydrate, some people may feel weakness, fatigue or lack of energy.

Chicken has no dietary fibre. Fibre comes mostly from fruit, vegetables, whole grains, legumes and pulses. It keeps the digestive system healthy and helps clear the bowels. If the diet is low in fibre, constipation can result. The body will also miss many plant-based substances that are important for gut health. Eating only chicken can also lower the intake of vitamin C, folate and many plant-based antioxidants. It is therefore better to include different food groups than to stick to one item.

On weight, if someone was earlier taking in more calories and a chicken-based diet lowers their total calories, they may lose weight. Even so, weight loss does not come from eating chicken alone. It comes mainly from a calorie deficit. If the chicken is fried, or eaten with oily, high-calorie sauces, weight may even rise instead of falling.

Eating only chicken for a month does not give the body a complete balance of the nutrients it needs. A healthy diet should have protein along with fruit, vegetables, whole grains, good fats and other nutrient-rich foods. Including chicken in the diet is fine, but restricting the whole diet to chicken is not the right approach.
