The Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has invited objections from the public to a proposal to cut 26 trees on the premises of the Government Medical College and Hospital (GMC), Nagpur. A public notice has been issued for the purpose. The trees are to be removed for various construction works.

NMC's Garden and Tree Authority department has asked citizens to submit written objections within seven days of the notice. The proposals relate to the construction of a 240-bed dormitory, a waiting room and a new urban health centre. One of the trees proposed for removal falls in the heritage category.

The first proposal comes from the dean of the Government Medical College and Hospital. It seeks permission to cut 23 trees standing in the way of the proposed 240-bed dormitory. Of these, 21 are cassia trees, aged between 17 and 46 years. One is a peltophorum, about 49 years old, and one is a babul, about 48 years old. All 23 trees have been placed in the non-heritage category.

The second proposal has been made by Avinash Gawande, medical superintendent of the Government Medical College and Hospital. It is for building a waiting room near rooms 4 and 5. It seeks permission to remove two gulmohar trees, aged 36 to 38 years. Both trees are in the non-heritage category.

The third proposal concerns a new urban health centre in the institution's Somwari Quarters building. The dean has sought permission to remove one neem tree here, aged about 51 years. The tree is in the heritage category, which makes its proposed removal a key aspect of the application.

According to the public notice, citizens who oppose the felling must submit a written objection, giving their reasons, within seven days to the Tree Officer, Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Civil Lines, Nagpur. Those objecting must also provide a valid identity proof. The NMC has made clear that objections received after the seven-day deadline will not be considered.

The notice has been issued by NMC's Deputy Commissioner (Garden) and Tree Officer. The proposals are at present in the public objection stage. The notice seeks permission to cut the trees. It does not establish that the trees have been cut or that final approval has been granted.
