The National Medical Commission has cleared 73 additional postgraduate seats at the Government Medical College and Hospital, Ghati, out of 87 proposed.
Ghati in Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar will now have more seats for postgraduate medical education. The National Medical Commission (NMC) has approved 73 additional seats in postgraduate courses at the Government Medical College and Hospital (Ghati).
Ghati had proposed a total of 87 seats, of which 73 have been cleared. Of these, 21 seats are in clinical branches and 52 in non-clinical branches.
Ghati currently has 200 MD and MS seats. Notably, admissions to all 200 seats have been completed this year. This shows that Ghati is getting a good response for postgraduate medical education. Given the rising demand and students' preferences, the administration had sent the proposal to increase seats. The approval is being seen as significant for the institution's academic expansion.
After MBBS, competition in the NEET PG examination is intense. Because seats are limited, many students do not get admission in the branch of their choice. The increase in seats at a government medical college will bring them relief. The increase is not limited to one or two branches. It will benefit branches ranging from basic medical sciences to paediatrics and ophthalmology.
Seats have increased in ten departments as follows: anatomy 9, physiology 18, biochemistry 15, pharmacology 6, microbiology 2, forensic medicine (FMT) 2, community medicine (PSM) 10, psychiatry 2, ophthalmology 4 and paediatrics 5. Together they make 73 seats.
There are also plans to increase MBBS seats. A proposal to add 50 more MBBS seats at Ghati has been sent to the state government. Dean Dr Shivaji Sukre has expressed hope that these seats will be available in the 2027-28 academic year.
In addition, 12 seats in the DM course are awaited. The 12 seats in DM, or Doctor of Medicine, a super-speciality course, are expected to be approved in the SSB.
